Toronto Trip aka The Trip from Hell

Nothing against Toronto. Just it started on a bad foot and got worse. Let me explain.

Carla’s family hosts a fitness expo every year in Toronto the last weekend in May/ first weekend in June. This year, we thought it might be fun to go help out for a couple of days and then take Nate and Evan to the Toronto Zoo for Nate’s birthday.

Except Jon’s mom was supposed to go to Toronto and watch the boys. And she ended up hurting her back and cancelled last minute. I should have stayed home with the boys, but decided to forge ahead. When we got there, it was agreed that someone would come and relieve me for a few hours a day so I could go and help out at the show. That didn’t happen. There was so much going on. So the boys and I hung out in the hotel room a lot.

Who knew that you could kill almost a full hour by putting them in the bath tub? I have pictures of that, but am saving it for their wedding days…or graduation parties or something.

The view from our hotel room kept them well occupied for a few minutes at a time.

And we could see the Go-train from a window near the elevators. We spent a lot of time there too. I was exhausted from trying to keep them entertained, carrying Evan through the hotel to the conference center (because we were right smack-dab in the middle of the terrible twos and didn’t want to walk. Ever.) And Jon was so busy at the expo that we only saw him at breakfast time, if at all.

By Sunday, it was apparent that we weren’t going to make it to the zoo. Between being tired and sore from all the Evan-carrying, it had rained all weekend and wasn’t letting up. So we decided we would get an early start from home. Except that one major highway we were supposed to take was closed. It took us an extra 45 minutes to get to the 417 and by that time, I had mixed up West from East and headed us in the wrong direction.

The kicker? We didn’t realize it was the wrong direction until we were TWO HOURS down the road. The good news is that the boys travel really well and didn’t seem to mind the almost-twelve hours in the van.

Jon and I have agreed to never speak of this trip again. At least not for a good ten or so years. We figure it might be funny then.
